VISA

Students who are citizens of an EU member country do not need a visa to enroll at the American School of Modern Music. All others must contact the French consulate where they reside to request the necessary information on the procedure to obtain a student visa and Resident Card. You must have enough funds to live and be lodged in the Paris region, because as a foreign national you will not be allowed to seek employment. The formalities for obtaining a visa vary from country to country and one should prepare sufficiently in advance.  Furthermore, it should be noted that finding suitable living accommodations in Paris requires a considerable amount of time and that most landlords require sufficient and provable financial guarantees before offering a student a lease.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

This exam determines the candidate's admissibility and also his or her program of study. Those persons on our mailing list receive an appointment form and are tested two weeks before the start of classes. We do not accept audition tapes, however a special audition appointment can be made during the school year ("Early Registration", see below) by contacting the School Secretariat. Each registered student receives a student card and a Certificate of Immatriculation (necessary for the obtention of a visa)

EARLY REGISTRATION

For those candidates who wish to complete admission formalities before the summer vacation. Students who are not citizens of an EU member country should choose this option because of the delays involved in applying for a Visa. Each registered student receives a Certificate of Matriculation (necessary to obtain a visa)

PAYMENT

At registration you must provide the total sum for the entire school year of tuition, pedagogic materiel and registration fee. All payments are to be made by cheque (or bank transfer) only. Once registration has taken place, no refund is possible. The program of study is determined the day you pass the audition.

LANGUAGE

Classes are held in French, with brief English translations available when necessary. Perfect fluency in expression is not necessary but one should be sufficiently able to understand enough French to follow the course. Private lessons can be held in English or in another language common to both parties.

HOUSING

The school does not provide lodging. It is possible to find a "maid's room" in Paris at around 350 to 450 Euros per month. Those students who play drums or wind instruments should take particular care in finding the right type of place to be able to practice their instrument without bothering the neighbours. An apartment in the suburbs can be more appropriate and public transportation is quite good and reasonably priced.
