Steve Coleman<\/b> began playing music just days before his 14th birthday<\/b> as a freshman at South Shore High School<\/b> on the south side of Chicago<\/b>. His first instrument was the violin<\/b>, but later that year, he switched to the alto saxophone<\/b>. After studying music basics and saxophone technique for three years, he decided to learn improvisation<\/b>, which led him to the music of Charlie Parker<\/b>, a favorite of his father.<\/p>\n

Steve studied at Illinois Wesleyan University<\/b> before transferring to Roosevelt University (Chicago Music College)<\/b> to immerse himself in Chicago\u2019s musical nightlife<\/b>. He sought mentorship from top Chicago saxophonists like Von Freeman<\/b>, Bunky Green<\/b>, Gido Sinclair<\/b>, and Sonny Greer<\/b>. By 1978, he led a band at the New Apartment Lounge<\/b>, performing Parker classics and writing music, but feeling creatively stagnant, he decided to move to New York City<\/b>.<\/p>\n

After hitchhiking to New York<\/b>, Steve stayed at a YMCA<\/b> and soon landed a gig with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band<\/b>, followed by stints with the Sam Rivers Big Band<\/b>, Cecil Taylor\u2019s Big Band<\/b>, and others. He worked with artists like David Murray<\/b>, Doug Hammond<\/b>, Dave Holland<\/b>, Michael Brecker<\/b>, and Abbey Lincoln<\/b>, while being deeply influenced by Von Freeman<\/b>, Sam Rivers<\/b>, and Doug Hammond<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Steve formed his iconic group Steve Coleman and Five Elements<\/b>, which became the foundation of his musical activities. Performing in clubs across Harlem<\/b> and Brooklyn<\/b>, the group developed the M-Base concept<\/b>\u2014a philosophical approach to music based on creating from personal experience. In 1985, he recorded his first albums on the JMT label<\/b>, including Motherland Pulse<\/i>, On The Edge Of Tomorrow<\/i>, and World Expansion<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Steve\u2019s music and philosophy were deeply influenced by his 1993 trip to Ghana<\/b>, where he studied the Dagbon drum language<\/b>. This experience shaped his albums Def Trance Beat<\/i> and A Tale of 3 Cities<\/i>. Later travels to Cuba<\/b>, Senegal<\/b>, and India<\/b> deepened his understanding of the connection between ancient traditions<\/b> and modern improvisation.<\/p>\n

Notable collaborations include work with AfroCuba de Matanzas<\/b> (resulting in the album The Sign and The Seal<\/i>), the formation of Steve Coleman and The Mystic Rhythm Society<\/b>, and Steve Coleman and The Council of Balance<\/b>, whose projects explored ancient philosophies<\/b> and African traditions<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Steve has worked with influential institutions like IRCAM in Paris<\/b>, receiving commissions to develop interactive computer software. His innovative music incorporates AI tools<\/b> like The Improviser<\/i>, reflecting his deep engagement with technology and composition<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Coleman\u2019s recordings span decades, including award-winning albums<\/b> such as:<\/p>\n

\u2022Functional Arrhythmias<\/i> (2013), inspired by the body\u2019s cyclical rhythms.<\/p>\n

\u2022Synovial Joints<\/i> (2015), a large ensemble work.<\/p>\n

\u2022Morphogenesis<\/i> (2017), featuring Steve Coleman\u2019s Natal Eclipse ensemble<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Steve has received numerous honors, including the MacArthur Fellowship<\/b> (2014), Doris Duke Artist Award<\/b> (2015), and Guggenheim Fellowship<\/b> (2014). He has been a faculty member at institutions like the University of California, Berkeley<\/b>, and has conducted residencies worldwide through his nonprofit, M-Base Concepts, Inc.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n
