Alex Terrier<\/strong> was born in Paris in 1980. \u201cI didn\u2019t grow up in a family of musicians, but my journey into the world of music began the day I first sat down at a piano.\u201d He started studying classical piano<\/strong> at age 8, and at 12, he discovered Duke Ellington\u2019s orchestra<\/strong> and the sound of Johnny Hodges<\/strong>\u2014a pivotal moment that led him to dedicate his life to jazz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would wake up and play piano before breakfast, listening to music constantly and studying tirelessly\u2014it drove my mom crazy!\u201d His early influences included Duke Ellington, Memphis Slim, Fats Domino,<\/strong> and Sydney Bechet,<\/strong> discovered through vinyl records in his father\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1999, Alex earned a Brevet de Technicien des M\u00e9tiers de la Musique<\/strong> in S\u00e8vres and a Gold Medal<\/strong> from the \u00c9cole Nationale de Musique d\u2019\u00c9vry.<\/strong> In 2004, he joined the Berklee College of Music,<\/strong> graduating in 2007 with a dual degree in Jazz Performance and Composition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Alex has been based in New York, pursuing a career as an independent artist, bandleader, composer, arranger,<\/strong> and educator.<\/strong> He leads the Alex Terrier New York Quartet<\/strong> in North America, the Alex Terrier European Quintet<\/strong> in Europe, and also performs in South America. \u201cMy goal is simple: to create beauty and share it. If my music helps even a few people feel better, my life has meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passionate about composition,<\/strong> Alex draws inspiration from classical and jazz masters like Bach, Debussy, Mozart, Ravel,<\/strong> and leading jazz innovators. His albums include Stop Requested,<\/em> recorded at Berklee with the guidance of George Garzone,<\/strong> and Roundtrip,<\/em> recorded in New York in 2009, which Joe Lovano<\/strong> described as the work of \u201ca very gifted and expressive saxophonist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lover of big bands, Alex has studied the works of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson,<\/strong> as well as modern composers like Kenny Wheeler<\/strong> and Maria Schneider.<\/strong> His arrangements span styles, from swing (Like Someone in Love<\/em>) to modern jazz (Scrupules<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an educator,<\/strong> Alex is praised for his passion and ability to inspire in a relaxed yet rigorous learning environment. \u201cI do my best to share my knowledge and motivate students.\u201d He teaches improvisation, composition, arranging,<\/strong> and ensemble mentorship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alex also produces music for visual media,<\/strong> exploring the possibilities of modern digital tools. A technical enthusiast, he co-designed a custom reed model<\/strong> with Fred Lebayle<\/strong> in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
