{"id":16864,"date":"2024-09-11T16:34:24","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T14:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asmm.fr\/our_team\/jean-philippe-viret\/"},"modified":"2025-01-21T23:52:08","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T22:52:08","slug":"jean-philippe-viret","status":"publish","type":"team","link":"https:\/\/www.asmm.fr\/en\/our_team\/jean-philippe-viret\/","title":{"rendered":"Jean-Philippe Viret"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Born in Saint-Quentin on September 16, 1959, <strong>Jean-Philippe Viret<\/strong> began studying music at 18, learning double bass with <strong>Jean-Paul Mac\u00e9<\/strong> and <strong>Jacques Cazauran<\/strong>, as well as harmony and counterpoint with <strong>Julien Falk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1981, he co-founded the <strong>Orchestre de Contrebasses<\/strong>, performing with the ensemble for over 30 years. Viret has collaborated with prominent musicians of his generation, such as <strong>Emmanuel Bex<\/strong>, <strong>Simon Goubert<\/strong>, and <strong>Marc Ducret<\/strong>, as well as jazz legends like <strong>Ren\u00e9 Urtreger<\/strong>, <strong>Georges Arvanitas<\/strong>, and <strong>Michel Graillier<\/strong>. He has also worked with international artists including <strong>Lee Konitz<\/strong>, <strong>Bill Carrothers<\/strong>, <strong>Dave Liebman<\/strong>, <strong>Kenny Wheeler<\/strong>, and <strong>Youn Sun Nah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1989 to 1997, he was a member of <strong>St\u00e9phane Grappelli\u2019s trio<\/strong>. In 1998, Viret founded the <strong>Trio Viret<\/strong> with <strong>Edouard Ferlet<\/strong> (piano) and <strong>Antoine Banville<\/strong>, later joined by <strong>Fabrice Moreau<\/strong> on drums. The trio has performed extensively in France and internationally, including concerts in New York, Montreal, Japan, China, and Korea. The group was nominated at the <strong>Victoires de la Musique<\/strong> in 2003 and won <strong>Best Group<\/strong> in 2011 and 2020, following the release of their acclaimed eighth album, <em>Ivresse<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viret also leads other innovative ensembles, such as the trio <strong>\u201c60% de Mati\u00e8re Grave\u201d<\/strong> (featuring <strong>Jean-Charles Richard<\/strong> on baritone saxophone and <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Thuillier<\/strong> on tuba) and the string quartet <strong>\u201cSuppl\u00e9ment d\u2019\u00c2me\u201d<\/strong> (with <strong>S\u00e9bastien Surel<\/strong>, <strong>David Gaillard<\/strong>, and <strong>Eric-Maria Couturier<\/strong>). With the latter, he recorded <em>Suppl\u00e9ment d\u2019\u00c2me<\/em> (2012) and <em>Les Id\u00e9es Heureuses<\/em> (2017).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He remains active in numerous projects, including the <strong>African Jazz Roots Quartet<\/strong>, duos with <strong>Atsushi Sakai<\/strong> (viola da gamba) and <strong>R\u00e9mi Gaudillat<\/strong>, and collaborations with groups like <strong>Mathias L\u00e9vy Trio<\/strong>, <strong>Emmanuel Borghi Trio<\/strong>, <strong>Triumviret<\/strong> (with Ad\u00e8le Viret and Oscar Viret), <strong>Les Primitifs du Futur<\/strong>, and <strong>Mathias L\u00e9vy\u2019s Personna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeanphilippeviret.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.jeanphilippeviret.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jean-Philippe Viret, born in Saint-Quentin in 1959, is a renowned double bassist and composer.
