Randy Brecker<\/strong> is a jazz trumpeter and composer<\/strong> who has helped shape the sound of jazz, R&B, and rock<\/strong> for over six decades. His performances on trumpet and flugelhorn<\/strong> have graced hundreds of albums<\/strong> by artists such as James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Parliament\/Funkadelic, Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, Jaco Pastorius,<\/strong> and Frank Zappa.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in 1945 in Philadelphia<\/strong> to a musical family, Randy\u2019s talent was nurtured from an early age. He attended Indiana University<\/strong> (1963\u201366), studying with Bill Adam, David Baker,<\/strong> and Jerry Coker,<\/strong> before moving to New York<\/strong>, where he played with prominent bands like Clark Terry\u2019s Big Bad Band, the Duke Pearson Big Band,<\/strong> and the Thad Jones Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1967<\/strong>, Randy ventured into jazz-rock<\/strong> with the band Blood, Sweat and Tears<\/strong>, but soon joined the Horace Silver Quintet.<\/strong> He released his first solo album, \u2018Score,\u2019<\/strong> in 1968<\/strong>, featuring a young Michael Brecker<\/strong> on tenor saxophone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Randy later joined Art Blakey\u2019s Jazz Messengers<\/strong> before forming the seminal fusion group \u2018Dreams\u2019<\/strong> in 1970, alongside Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham,<\/strong> and John Abercrombie.<\/strong> The band recorded two acclaimed albums, \u2018Dreams\u2019<\/strong> and \u2018Imagine My Surprise,\u2019<\/strong> on Columbia Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1975<\/strong>, Randy and Michael formed the Brecker Brothers Band<\/strong>, a group that released six albums<\/strong> on Arista and earned seven Grammy nominations<\/strong>. Their iconic debut featured the now-classic \u201cSome Skunk Funk.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1992<\/strong>, the Brecker Brothers reunited for a world tour and the Grammy-nominated album \u2018The Return of the Brecker Brothers.\u2019<\/strong> The follow-up, \u2018Out of the Loop\u2019 (1994),<\/strong> won two Grammys.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a solo artist<\/strong>, Randy explored various styles, releasing notable albums like \u2018Into the Sun\u2019 (1997)<\/strong>\u2014inspired by Brazilian music\u2014and \u201834th n\u2019 Lex\u2019 (2003)<\/strong>, which won him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Randy has collaborated with legends such as Stevie Wonder, Larry Coryell, Hal Galper,<\/strong> and Billy Cobham.<\/strong> In 2007<\/strong>, he won a Grammy<\/strong> for his live album \u2018Randy Brecker Live with the WDR Big Band.\u2019<\/strong> That same year, his brother Michael Brecker<\/strong> passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008<\/strong>, Randy released \u2018Randy in Brazil,\u2019<\/strong> recorded in S\u00e3o Paulo with Brazilian musicians, earning him another Grammy<\/strong>. He also recorded a \u201cTribute to the Brecker Brothers\u201d<\/strong> in Japan and celebrated his Polish roots with \u2018Jazz Suite Tykocin\u2019<\/strong> in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2013<\/strong>, he toured Europe with the Brecker Brothers Band Reunion<\/strong> and released a live DVD and studio album featuring David Sanborn, Mike Stern,<\/strong> and Dave Weckl.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Randy\u2019s project \u2018Night in Calisia\u2019<\/strong> with Wlodek Pawlik<\/strong> won a Grammy<\/strong> in 2014. He continued releasing innovative works like \u2018RandyPOP!\u2019<\/strong> and collaborations with artists such as Eric Marienthal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020<\/strong>, Randy won his 7th Grammy<\/strong> for his solo on \u2018Sozinho\u2019 (NDR Big Band Rocks)<\/strong> and released \u2018Double Dealin\u2019\u2019<\/strong> with Eric Marienthal, which was also Grammy-nominated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His latest projects include the 2023 release \u2018Randy Live at the Amazonas Green Jazz Fest\u2019<\/strong> and the 2024 album \u2018The Hidden World Of Piloo,\u2019<\/strong> co-produced with his wife Ada Rovatti.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
