He sang <strong>background vocals<\/strong> on more than <strong>60 Latin recordings<\/strong>, many of them <strong>Grammy-winning<\/strong>. In 1999, he joined <strong>Shakira\u2019s touring band<\/strong> while creating his own original music and signing a <strong>development deal with Warner Chappell<\/strong>. He later left Shakira\u2019s band to move to <strong>New York City<\/strong> to pursue his own career. Within a year, he debuted at <strong>Carnegie Hall<\/strong> with the <strong>Movie Music of Spike Lee<\/strong>, and Spike Lee invited him to write the <strong>end credit song<\/strong> for his film <strong>\u201cShe Hate Me\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Raul was signed by legendary producer <strong>Arif Mardin<\/strong> to Manhattan Records under the <strong>Blue Note<\/strong> label, where he released two acclaimed albums: <strong>\u201cState of Mind\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cA World Within A World\u201d<\/strong>, co-produced with Arif\u2019s son, <strong>Joe Mardin<\/strong>. He made his <strong>television debut<\/strong> on <strong>The David Letterman Show<\/strong>, followed by appearances on <strong>Leno<\/strong>, <strong>Ferguson<\/strong>, <strong>Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong>, <strong>Later with Jools Holland<\/strong> (UK), and <strong>One Shot Not with Manu Katch\u00e9<\/strong> (France).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Raul has collaborated with numerous industry legends, including <strong>Bill Withers<\/strong>, <strong>Herbie Hancock<\/strong>, <strong>Sting<\/strong>, <strong>Terence Blanchard<\/strong>, and <strong>Dianne Reeves<\/strong>. He received <strong>two Grammy nominations<\/strong> in the <strong>Best Jazz Vocal Album<\/strong> category for <strong>\u201cBad Ass and Blind\u201d (2017)<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cIf You Really Want\u201d (2018)<\/strong>. Since moving to the <strong>DMV<\/strong>, Raul has become an accomplished <strong>recording engineer<\/strong>, recording all the vocals for these albums in his <strong>home studio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>2019<\/strong>, Raul received the <strong>Distinguished Alumnus Award<\/strong> from the <strong>University of Miami<\/strong> and spoke at his high school, <strong>Santa Fe Prep<\/strong>. His 2020 album, <strong>\u201cThe Mirror\u201d<\/strong>, was nominated for <strong>Best Jazz Album<\/strong> by the <strong>A2IM Libera Awards<\/strong>. In <strong>2021<\/strong>, Raul was awarded the <strong>Disability Rights Ambassador of the Year Award<\/strong>, presented by <strong>Jason Mraz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the lockdown, Raul collaborated on <strong>Alex Cuba\u2019s Grammy-winning album \u201cMendo\u201d<\/strong> and pursued a long-time dream of recording a <strong>guitar duets album<\/strong> with guitarists like <strong>Mike Stern<\/strong>, <strong>Dean Parks<\/strong>, <strong>Lionel Loueke<\/strong>, and <strong>Stephane Wrembel<\/strong>.
