Combining <strong>timeless melodicism<\/strong> with <strong>forward-thinking lines and textures<\/strong>, his style and approach have created a strong following of fans around the world. He frequently <strong>tours worldwide<\/strong> and records with his own groups as well as artists such as <strong>Dr. Lonnie Smith<\/strong>, who says of Kreisberg: <em>\u201cHe is a passionate musician with great vision, and he is constantly in fiery pursuit of innovation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in <strong>New York City<\/strong>, <strong>guitarist and composer Jonathan Kreisberg<\/strong> has fond memories of a childhood steeped in music. <em>\u201cI was lucky to grow up in a household that had a great and wide-ranging record collection,\u201d<\/em> he recalls, <em>\u201cincluding <\/em><strong><em>Coltrane\u2019s My Favorite Things<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em><strong><em>John Williams playing the \u2018Concierto de Aranjuez\u2019<\/em><\/strong><em>, and <\/em><strong><em>Cream\u2019s Disraeli Gears<\/em><\/strong><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan started playing <strong>guitar<\/strong> at the age of <strong>ten<\/strong> after moving to <strong>Miami<\/strong> with his family. At <strong>16<\/strong>, he was admitted to the <strong>New World School of the Arts<\/strong>, where his <strong>jazz studies<\/strong> took center stage. Intensely dedicated to the instrument, he was featured in <strong>Guitar Player<\/strong> and <strong>DownBeat<\/strong> while still in his teens. He won a <strong>scholarship<\/strong> to the <strong>University of Miami<\/strong>, where he held the <strong>guitar chair<\/strong> in the acclaimed <strong>Concert Jazz Band<\/strong>, touring <strong>Brazil<\/strong> and performing with <strong>Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, and Red Rodney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon graduation, Jonathan began playing <strong>straight-ahead jazz gigs<\/strong> as well as a myriad of other projects. He performed <strong>20th-century works<\/strong> with the <strong>New World Symphony<\/strong> under <strong>Michael Tilson Thomas<\/strong>. He also recorded a <strong>C.D.<\/strong> and performed extensively with the <strong>progressive rock group Third Wish<\/strong> (including opening slots for <strong>Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen<\/strong>). He also formed the first incarnation of the <strong>Jonathan Kreisberg Trio<\/strong>. Based in <strong>Miami<\/strong>, this <strong>electric-based Trio<\/strong> released a <strong>C.D.<\/strong> and completed several <strong>U.S. East Coast tours<\/strong>, which included opening slots for <strong>George Benson and Steve Morse<\/strong>. He also began giving <strong>clinics<\/strong> at <strong>music schools and universities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While still in his early <strong>20s<\/strong>, he returned to his birthplace in <strong>NYC<\/strong> with his focus on <strong>cutting-edge acoustic jazz<\/strong>. <em>\u201cMy Miami Trio was about coming up with new textures and being communicative while still playing intense musically. When I moved to New York, I entered a more introspective phase, really getting deeper into melodies and harmonies.\u201d<\/em> This also coincided with a <strong>renewed interest in the jazz tradition<\/strong>. <em>\u201cI found that the deeper I got into the tradition, the more possibilities I became aware of for the future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since returning to <strong>New York City<\/strong>, Jonathan has worked in the bands of many <strong>jazz greats<\/strong>, including <strong>Dr. Lonnie Smith, Lee Konitz, Joe Locke, Stefano Dibatista, Ari Hoenig, Joel Frahm, Don Friedman, Greg Tardy, Donald Edwards, Jane Monheit, and Yosvany Terry<\/strong>. He has also led <strong>groups<\/strong> of various instrumentations featuring artists such as <strong>Bill Stewart, Larry Grenadier, Gary Versace, Mark Ferber, Kevin Hays, and Scott Wendholt<\/strong> among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan has now recorded <strong>ten CDs<\/strong> as a leader, including his latest two albums, <strong>\u201cCAPTURING SPIRITS &#8211; JKQ LIVE!\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cKREISBERG MEETS VERAS\u201d<\/strong>, the first being Jonathan\u2019s first <strong>live album<\/strong> with his dynamic <strong>new quartet<\/strong> and the second a <strong>document of his great musical friendship with nylon-string genius Nelson Veras<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although currently based in <strong>New York City<\/strong>, Jonathan can be seen <strong>on tour worldwide<\/strong>. Entering the major <strong>Jazz Festival circuit<\/strong> with their electrifying show at <strong>Jazz Baltica<\/strong> (the combined video footage is now at <strong>500,000 YouTube hits<\/strong> and counting), <strong>JKQ<\/strong> has subsequently performed many of the major <strong>European and American festivals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan is also a <strong>respected educator<\/strong> with over <strong>25 years of experience<\/strong>. In <strong>2017<\/strong>, he released his first <strong>book<\/strong> of compositions and transcriptions, <strong>\u201cOFFERINGS OF NOTE\u201d<\/strong>, as well as a series of instructional videos called <strong>\u201cPOLYRHYTHMIC GUITAR\u201d<\/strong>. While on tour, he always makes time for <strong>masterclasses and residencies<\/strong>, as well as his own <strong>\u201cNEW FOR NOW\u201d music intensive<\/strong>, held every summer for the past <strong>four years<\/strong> in <strong>Brooklyn, NY<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When not on tour, Jonathan can be found at his steady <strong>Wednesday trio hits at Bar Next Door in NYC<\/strong>, as well as at <strong>the Jazz Standard and Smalls Jazz Club<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jonathan Kreisberg is a New York-based jazz guitarist and composer known for his melodic approach and innovative textures.
