Having started playing the <strong>saxophone<\/strong> at the age of thirteen, he became interested in <strong>jazz<\/strong> through records by <strong>Art Pepper<\/strong> and <strong>Cannonball Adderley<\/strong>, two musicians who would remain lasting influences. He pursued <strong>academic training<\/strong> before beginning his professional career in the <strong>pop music scene<\/strong>. His encounter with <strong>Massimo Urbani (1957\u20131993)<\/strong>, an Italian <strong>alto saxophonist<\/strong> deeply influenced by the fiery style of <strong>Charlie Parker<\/strong>, also played a decisive role in his ambition to become a <strong>jazz musician<\/strong>. However, it took a fortunate series of events for the young <strong>Roman saxophonist<\/strong>\u2019s talent to emerge in full light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encouraged to go to <strong>Paris<\/strong> by pianist <strong>Jean-Pierre Como<\/strong>, who heard him in the summer of <strong>1992<\/strong> at the <strong>Calvi festival<\/strong>, <strong>Stefano Di Battista<\/strong> quickly charmed several musicians in the <strong>French capital<\/strong> who helped launch his career. Notably, drummer <strong>Aldo Romano<\/strong> (<strong>two albums<\/strong> document their collaboration) and conductor <strong>Laurent Cugny<\/strong>, who gave him \u2013 along with his compatriot, trumpeter <strong>Flavio Boltro<\/strong> \u2013 a significant role in the <strong>ONJ (Orchestre National de Jazz)<\/strong> he formed in <strong>1994<\/strong>. Though he became primarily active in <strong>France<\/strong>, he maintained close ties with the <strong>Italian jazz community<\/strong>, recording with compatriots such as <strong>Enrico Rava (1996)<\/strong>, <strong>Rita Marcotulli (1998)<\/strong>, <strong>Daniele Scannapieco (2003)<\/strong>, and <strong>Dario Rosciglione (2004)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, in <strong>2002<\/strong>, he recorded his <strong>third album<\/strong> for <strong>Blue Note<\/strong>, <strong><em>Round About Roma<\/em><\/strong>, with a <strong>transalpine quartet<\/strong> (<strong>Eric Legnini, Andr\u00e9 Ceccarelli, Rosario Bonaccorso<\/strong>) and a <strong>symphony orchestra<\/strong> conducted by <strong>Vince Mendoza<\/strong>. He continued his journey with the label, releasing a <strong>tribute project to Charlie Parker<\/strong>, followed by the virtuosic <strong><em>Trouble Shootin\u2019<\/em><\/strong> in <strong>2007<\/strong>, featuring guest musicians such as <strong>Fabrizio Bosso<\/strong> on <strong>trumpet<\/strong> and <strong>Baptiste Trotignon<\/strong> on the <strong>Hammond organ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years later, he returned to the <strong>Italian label Alice Records<\/strong> with the album <strong><em>Woman\u2019s Land<\/em><\/strong>, drawing inspiration from some of the <strong>great female figures of the 20th century<\/strong>. At the same time, he continued a faithful collaboration with <strong>singer Nicky Nicolai<\/strong>, accompanying her on her personal projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recognized <strong>sideman<\/strong>, invited by his peers in both <strong>France<\/strong> and <strong>Italy<\/strong>, on <strong>stage<\/strong> and in the <strong>studio<\/strong>, he has cultivated a particular ability to engage in <strong>musical dialogue<\/strong> with other artists. In <strong>2014<\/strong>, he recorded his album <strong><em>Gi\u00f9 La Testa<\/em><\/strong> with <strong>Bayonne-born guitarist Sylvain Luc<\/strong>, a <strong>melodist<\/strong> as virtuosic as <strong>Di Battista<\/strong> himself. He then reunited with <strong>Nicky Nicolai<\/strong> for an original project with <strong>writer Erri De Luca<\/strong>, titled <strong><em>La Musica Insieme<\/em><\/strong>, at the crossroads of <strong>Neapolitan literature<\/strong> and <strong>musical performance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>2021<\/strong>, <strong>Stefano Di Battista<\/strong> embarked on an <strong>album paying tribute to Ennio Morricone<\/strong>, with whom he had the <strong>privilege of working<\/strong>. On this project, he was joined once again by <strong>Andr\u00e9 Ceccarelli<\/strong> on <strong>drums<\/strong>, <strong>Fred Nardin<\/strong> on <strong>piano<\/strong>, and <strong>Daniele Sorrentino<\/strong> on <strong>double bass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>N\u00e9 en 1969 \u00e0 Rome, Stefano Di Battista devient saxophoniste de jazz et s\u2019installe \u00e0 Paris en 1992.
