Raised in a family of Gypsy musicians, he began playing guitar at an early age, following in the footsteps of Django Reinhardt. His early recordings in the 1980s (<em>Routes to Django<\/em>, <em>Swing \u201981<\/em>, <em>Fifteen<\/em>) quickly drew attention for their virtuosity, musical maturity, and improvisational depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his career, Lagr\u00e8ne has developed a personal and versatile musical language, blending Gypsy jazz, swing, modern jazz, and fusion. He has performed and recorded with many leading artists including <strong>St\u00e9phane Grappelli, Jaco Pastorius, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Paco de Luc\u00eda, Larry Coryell, Stanley Clarke<\/strong>, and <strong>Didier Lockwood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among his most notable projects are his <strong>duo with Sylvain Luc<\/strong>, praised for its refined musical interplay, and the celebrated <em>Gipsy Project<\/em>, which brought renewed visibility to the Gypsy jazz tradition through a modern lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Current activity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lagr\u00e8ne continues to be highly active on the international scene. He currently leads an <strong>electric trio<\/strong> with <strong>William Brunard<\/strong> (double bass) and <strong>Rapha\u00ebl Pannier<\/strong> (drums), exploring contemporary jazz and improvisation with precision and creative freedom. In parallel, he leads an <strong>acoustic trio<\/strong> with <strong>Diego Imbert<\/strong> and <strong>Hono Winterstein<\/strong>, with whom he recently recorded <em>Bir\u00e9li Lagr\u00e8ne Plays Loulou Gast\u00e9<\/em> (2023), a tribute to one of France\u2019s great chanson composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Awards and educational engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, Bir\u00e9li Lagr\u00e8ne has received numerous accolades, including the <strong>Django d\u2019Or<\/strong>, <strong>Victoires de la Musique<\/strong>, and the distinction of <strong>Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres<\/strong>.
