John Ellis<\/b> is one of <\/span>New York\u2019s premiere tenor saxophone voices<\/b>. With more than <\/span>150 album credits as a sideman<\/b>, John has recorded with a wide variety of artists such as <\/span>Charlie Hunter, Robert Glasper, Darcy James Argue, Helen Sung, Kendrick Scott Oracle, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Sting<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

John was the <\/span>2nd place winner<\/b> of the prestigious <\/span>Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition<\/b> in <\/span>2002<\/b>, he was the recipient of <\/span>three composition grants<\/b> through <\/span>The Jazz Gallery<\/b> for the creation of new work (<\/span>\u201cDreamscapes,\u201d \u201cThe Ice Siren,\u201d and \u201cMOBRO\u201d<\/b>), and he was selected as the <\/span>2014 Make Jazz Fellow<\/b> by the <\/span>18th Street Arts Center<\/b> in <\/span>Santa Monica<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

John has released <\/span>fourteen albums<\/b> as a <\/span>leader<\/b>, three of those featuring his <\/span>New Orleans-centered band Double-Wide<\/b>, which has <\/span>toured extensively<\/b> and was featured on the <\/span>Main Stage of the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He <\/span>co-produced<\/b> the music for the <\/span>children\u2019s book series \u201cBaby Loves Jazz\u201d<\/b> with <\/span>Aaron Goldberg<\/b>, and he wrote the <\/span>theme music for the NPR podcast \u201cRough Translation.\u201d<\/b> His latest album, <\/span>\u201cBizet: Carmen in Jazz,\u201d<\/b> was released on <\/span>Blue Room Music<\/b> in <\/span>December 2023<\/b> and features <\/span>Reuben Rogers, Gary Versace, and Jason Marsalis<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
