Piano classThe ASMM Program
Presentation
Group piano classes offer a shared space where the social dynamic of the group encourages individual progress in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
The American School offers three group piano classes:
- Piano for Non-Pianists (PNP)
- Group Piano – Level 1
- Group Piano – Level 2
Piano for Non-Pianists / Beginners
A class designed for non-pianist musicians, aimed at helping them acquire essential piano skills. The goal is to enable them to accompany themselves and use the piano in contexts such as composition, arrangement, and live performance. This course is also recommended for students in the professional program, to ensure a solid understanding of harmony and music production classes, where the keyboard plays a central role.
Group Piano – Level 1
This course offers the opportunity to discover and work on a variety of pieces from contemporary, jazz, or pop repertoires.
You will learn to:
• Develop accompaniment techniques suited to different musical styles.
• Understand and apply the basic concepts of harmony.
• Explore the fundamental tools of piano improvisation.
• Deepen your musical knowledge through the study of styles and influential pianists.
This course is ideal for building a solid foundation in piano playing and preparing for group performance as part of the school’s ensembles.
It is intended for pianists who already have some experience with the instrument but need to strengthen the basics of accompaniment, harmonization principles, and core improvisation skills.
Group Piano – Level 2
This course is intended for musicians who have already acquired the basics of piano accompaniment and improvisation and who wish to deepen their knowledge of jazz and standards in order to play in the school’s advanced ensembles and feel comfortable in various contexts, including jam sessions.
You will learn to:
• Develop accompaniment techniques suited to different musical aesthetics.
• Practice improvisation over more advanced chord progressions.
• Apply advanced harmony concepts, such as chord substitutions, extensions, modulations, as well as the study of scales, modes, reharmonizations, upper structures, and bebop and jazz fusion vocabulary.
• Adapt your playing to the musical style by exploring the unique characteristics of each genre (funk, bossa nova, ballads, blues, bebop, etc.).
• Analyze and emulate the approaches of influential pianists by studying their techniques and stylistic choices.

Each year of instrumental instruction concludes with an end-of-year concert.
