Film Scoring The ASMM Program
Presentation
This bi-monthly 4-hour course (15 sessions per year) is intended for composers with a home studio who are proficient in a DAW (Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase…) and a notation software (Sibelius, Musescore, Dorico…).
Each student will complete 6 film sequences/projects over the course of the year and will explore original composition and orchestration techniques used by professional film composers.
The final project of the year will involve scoring original short films in partnership with emerging directors.
- The role of the composer, arranger, and orchestrator
- How to write for real and virtual instruments
- Targeted composition exercises (underscoring), limited intervals, tone rows, hexachords, ostinatos, modulations, harmony, motifs…
- Analysis of original film music scores
- Virtual orchestration (mock-ups) in Logic and live orchestration in Sibelius based on original examples
Concerts
Students will have the opportunity to present one of their projects during a film concert organized by the school at the end of the year.
Master-classes

A certificate of completion is issued at the end of the year
Admission Requirements
Instrumental proficiency, reading and arranging skills. Knowledge of a DAW and notation software.
This course is also open to students in the professional program.
