The American School of Modern Music offers a free online metronome to support musicians’ daily practice. Available without an account on computers and phones, this ASMM tool helps you work on pulse, rhythmic accuracy and timing, whatever your instrument.
A metronome for your practice routine
Set the tempo from 20 to 300 BPM or use tap tempo to find the speed of a piece. Choose your time signature, customise accents and muted beats, then add subdivisions: eighth notes, triplets, sixteenth notes, quintuplets, sextuplets or septuplets.
From groove to polyrhythms
Swing, silent bars and progressive tempo increases let you vary your exercises. The polyrhythm mode offers two or three voices to explore overlapping rhythms. You can also save and share your settings to return to an exercise easily.
To get started, choose a comfortable tempo and practise a short phrase with a steady pulse. Then mute some beats to work on maintaining your own internal time.
